മിക്കവാറും മതചടങ്ങിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ഒന്നോ അതിലധികമോ മനുഷ്യരെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന പ്രവൃത്തിയാണ് നരബലി. ദേവതാപ്രീതി, ഭൂമിയുടെ ഫലപുഷ്ടി വർധിപ്പിക്കുക, അമാനുഷിക ശക്തികൾ സ്വായത്തമാക്കുക, സ്വർഗലാഭം, രോഗമുക്തി തുടങ്ങി വ്യത്യസ്ത നേട്ടങ്ങൾ ലഭിക്കുമെന്ന വിശ്വാസത്തിലായിരുന്നു നരബലി നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്. ചരിത്രത്തിലുടനീളം ഒട്ടുമിക്ക സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലും നരബലി നടപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നു കാണാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇന്നും ഭാരതത്തിന്ററ വടക്കൻ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ നരബലി ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു.

Human sacrifice is the act of killing one or more humans as part of a ritual, which is usually intended to please or appease gods, a human ruler, public or jurisdictional demands for justice by capital punishment, an authoritative/priestly figure or spirits of dead ancestors or as a retainer sacrifice, wherein a monarch's servants are killed in order for them to continue to serve their master in the next life.
