പ്രകാശത്തെ പ്രകാശസംവേദനക്ഷമമായ ഒരു പ്രതലത്തിൽ(ഫിലിം/ഡിജിറ്റൽ സെൻസർ) പതിപ്പിച്ച് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രത്തെ ഛായാചിത്രം അഥവാ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫ്/ഫോട്ടോ എന്നു പറയുന്നു. സാധാരണയായി ഛായാഗ്രാഹികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ഛായാചിത്രങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. ഛായാഗ്രാഹി കാചങ്ങൾ(ലെൻസ്) ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഒരു ദൃശ്യത്തിന്റെ പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ ഗോചരമായ തരംഗദൈർഘ്യങ്ങളെ സംവേദകപ്രതലത്തിലേക്ക് കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കുകയും അതുമൂലം മനുഷ്യനേത്രം കാനുന്നതിനു തുല്യമായ ഒരു പ്രതിബിംബം അവിടെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഛായാചിത്രങ്ങൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന പ്രക്രിയക്ക് ഛായാഗ്രഹണം എന്നു പറയുന്നു.
