बारूद NOUN

1. एक प्रकार का चर्ण या बुकनी जो गंधक, शोरे ओर कोयले को एक में पीसकर बनती है और आग पाकर भक से उड़ जाती है । तोप बंदूक इसी से चलती है । दारू । विशेष—ऐसा पता चलता है कि इसका प्रयोग भारतवर्ष और चीन में बंदूक आदि अगन्यस्त्र और तमाशे में बहुत पुराने जमाने से किया जाता था । अशोक के शिलालाखों में 'अग्गिखंध' या या अग्निस्कंध शब्द तमाशे (आतशबाजी) के लिये आया है, पर इस बात का पता आजतक नहीं लगा है कि सबसे पहले इसका आविष्कार कहाँ, कब और किसने किया है । इसका प्रचार युरोप में चौदहवीं शताब्दी में मूर (अरब) के लोगों ने किया और सोलहवीं शताब्दी तक इसका प्रयोग केवल बंदूकों को चलाने में होता रहा । आजकल अनेक प्रकार की बारूदें मोटी, महीन, सम, विषम रवे की बनती हैं । उसके संयोजक द्रव्यों की मात्रा निश्चित नहीं है । देश देश में प्रयोजनानुसार अंतर रहता है पर साधारण रीति से बारूद बनाने में प्रति सेकड़ ७५ से ७८ अंश तक शोरा, १० या १२ अंश तक गंधक और १२ से १५ अंश तक कोयला पड़ता है । ये तीनों पदार्थ अच्छी तरह पीस छानकर एक में मिलाए जाते हैं । फिर तारपीन का तेल या स्पिरिट डालकर चूर्ण को भलीभाँति मलना पड़ता है । इसके पीछे उसे धूप से सुखाते हैं । तमाशे की बारुद में कोयले की मात्रा अधिक डाली जाती है । कभी कभी लोहचुन भी फूल अच्छे बँधने के लिये डालते हैं । भारतवर्ष में अब बारुद बंदूक के काम की कम बनती है, प्रायः तमाशे की ही बारूद बनाई जाती है ।

बारूद एक विस्फोटक रासायनिक मिश्रण है। इसे गन पाउडर (gunpowder) या अपने काले रंग के कारण काला पाउडर भी कहते हैं। बारूद गंधक, कोयला एवं शोरा का मिश्रण होता है और यह मानव इतिहास का सर्वप्रथम निर्मित विस्फोटक था। बारूद का प्रयोग पटाखों एवं नोदक (प्रोपेलन्ट) के रूप में अग्निशस्त्रों (firearms) में किया जाता है। बारूद चिंगारी पाकर तेजी से जलता है जिससे भारी मात्रा में गैस एवं गरम ठोस पैदा होता है।
