हिमालय पर्वतश्रृंखलाओं के दक्षिणवर्ती भूभाग में कश्मीर के पूर्व से लेकर नेपाल तक पहाड़ी भाषाएँ बोली जाती हैं। ग्रियर्सन ने आधुनिक भारतीय आर्यभाषाओं का वर्गीकरण करते समय पहाड़ी भाषाओं का एक स्वतंत्र समुदाय माना है। चैटर्जी ने इन्हें पैशाची, दरद अथवा खस प्राकृत पर आधारित मानकर मध्यका में इनपर राजस्थान की प्राकृत एवं अपभ्रंश भाषाओं का प्रभाव घोषित किया है। एक नवीन मत के अनुसार कम से कम मध्य पहाड़ी भाषाओं का उद्गम शौरसेनी प्राकृत है, जो राजस्थानी का मूल भी है।
