पक्षाघात NOUN
- अर्धांग रोग जिसमें शरीर के दाहिने या बाएँ किसी पार्श्व के सब अंग (जैसे, हाथ पैर, कंधा, इत्यादि) क्रियाहीन हो जाते हैं । आधे अंग का लकवा । फालिज । विशेष—वैद्यक के अनुसार इस रोग में कुपित वायु शरीर के अर्धांग में भरकर और उसकी शिराओं और स्नायुओं का शोषण करके संधिबंधनों और मस्तिष्क को शिथिल कर देती है जिससे उस पार्श्व के सब अंग निष्क्रिय और निश्चेष्ट हो जाते हैं । डाक्टरों के अनुसार पक्षाघात दो प्रकार का का होता है, एक तो वह जिसमें अंगों की गति मारी जाती है, दूसरा वह जिसमें संवेदना नष्ट हो जाती है और अंग सुन्न हो जाते हैं ।

पक्षाघात या लकवा मारना (Paralysis) एक या एकाधिक मांसपेशी समूह की मांसपेशियों के कार्य करने में पूर्णतः असमर्थ होने की स्थिति को कहते हैं। पक्षाघात से प्रभावी क्षेत्र की संवेदन-शक्ति समाप्त हो सकती है या उस भाग को चलना-फिरना या घुमाना असम्भव हो जाता है। यदि दुर्बलता आंशिक है तो उसे आंशिक पक्षाघात कहते हैं।

The word "paralysis" derives from the Greek παράλυσις, meaning "disabling of the nerves" from παρά (para) meaning "beside, by" and λύσις (lysis) meaning "making loose". A paralysis accompanied by involuntary tremors is usually called "palsy".
