1. रेँगने या उड़ानेवाला क्षुद्र जंतु । कीड़ा । मकोड़ । विशेष—सुश्रुत ने कीटकल्य में इनके जो नाम गिनाए है और उनके काटने और डक मारने आदि से जो प्रभाव मनुष्य के शरीर पर पड़ता है, उसके विचार से उनके चार भेद किए है? बातप्रकृति, जिनके काटने आदि से मनुष्य के शरीर में वात का प्रकोप होता है । पित्तप्रकृति, जिनके काटने से पित का प्रकोप होता है । श्लेष्मप्रकृति, जिनके काटने से कफ कुपित होता है । त्रिदोषप्रकृति, जिनके काटने से त्रिदोष होता है । अगिया (अग्निनमा), ग्वालिन (आवर्तक) आदि को वातप्रकृति; भिड़ भौरा, ब्रह्मनी (ब्रह्माणिका), पताबिछिया या छिउँकी (पत्रवृशिचक), कनखजुरा (शतपादक) मकड़ी, गदहला (गर्दभी) आदि को पित्तप्रकृति तथा काली गोह आदि को श्लेष्मप्रकृति लिखा है । ऊपर की नामावली से स्पष्च है कि कीट शब्द के अंतर्गत कुछ रीढ़वाले जंतु भी आ गए हैं, पर अधिकतर बिना रीढ़वाले जतुओं ही को कीट कहते है । पाशचात्य जीवततत्वविदों ने इन बिना रीढ़वाले जतुओं के बहुत से भेद किए हैं, जिनमें कुछ तो आकारपरिवर्तम के विचार से किए गए हैं, कुछ पंख के विचार से और कुछ मुखाकृति के विचार से । हमारे यहा कीट शब्द के अंतर्गत जिन जीवों को लिया गया हैं, वे सब ऊष्मज और अंडज हैं । ऊष्मज तो सब कीट हैं, पर सब अंडज कीट नहीं हैं । जैसे, पक्षी मछली आदि को कीट नहीं नहीं कह सकते ।
2. हीनता या तुच्छाताव्यंजक शब्द । जैसे, छिपकीट = तुच्छ हाथी । पक्षिकीट ।
3. जमी हुई मैल । मल ।

Description

कीट अर्थोपोडा संघ का एक प्रमुख वर्ग है। इसके 10 लाख से अधिक जातियों का नामकरण हो चुका है। पृथ्वी पर पाये जाने वाले सजीवों में आधे से अधिक कीट हैं। ऐसा अनुमान लगाया गया है कि कीट वर्ग के 3 करोड़ प्राणी ऐसे हैं जिनको चिन्हित ही नहीं किया गया है अतः इस ग्रह पर जीवन के विभिन्न रूपों में कीट वर्ग का योगदान 90% है। ये पृथ्वी पर सभी वातावरणों में पाए जाते हैं। सिर्फ समुद्रों में इनकी संख्या कुछ कम है। आर्थिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण कीट हैं: एपिस (मधुमक्खी) व बांबिक्स, लैसिफर ; रोग वाहक कीट, एनाफलीज, क्यूलेक्स तथा एडीज (मच्छर); यूथपीड़क टिड्डी (लोकस्टा); तथा जीवीत जीवाश्म लिमूलस आदि।
