Crystallization is the process by which solids form, where the atoms or molecules are highly organized into a structure known as a crystal. Some ways by which crystals form are precipitating from a solution, freezing, or more rarely deposition directly from a gas. Attributes of the resulting crystal depend largely on factors such as temperature, air pressure, cooling rate, and in the case of liquid crystals, time of fluid evaporation.

படிகமாதல் அல்லது பளிங்காக்கல் என்பது திரவம் அல்லது கரைசலிலிருந்து படிகம் உருவாகும் செயன்முறையாகும். படிகமாதல் ஓர் வீழ்படிவுச் செயன்முறை ஆகும். (எ.கா) ஒரு பனிக்கட்டியை வெப்பநிலை மாறா நிகழ்வில் எடுத்துக் கொள்வோம். அப்போது ஒரு மோல் பனிக்கட்டியானது நீரில் கரையும். இது கரைத்தல் (dissolution) எனப்படும். அதேசமயம் ஒரு மோல் நீர் மூலக்கூறானது உறைந்து பனிக்கட்டியாக மாறுகிறது. இதுவே படிகமாக்கல் எனப்படும். படிகமாக்கல் மற்றும் கரைத்தல் இரண்டும் ஒரே வேகத்தில் நிகழும் போது இந்த அமைப்பு இயங்கச் சமநிலையில் இருக்கும்
