ഭൂമിയിൽ നാം നിൽക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിന് നേരെ മുകളിൽ ഖഗോളത്തിൽ വരുന്ന ബിന്ദുവിനു ശിരോബിന്ദു (Zenith) എന്ന്‌ പറയുന്നു. നേരെ താഴെയുള്ള ബിന്ദുവിനു അധോബിന്ദു (Nadir) എന്നും പറയുന്നു. ഖഗോളത്തിന്റെ ധ്രുവങ്ങളിൽ കൂടെയും ശിരോ-അധോബിന്ദുക്കളിൽ കൂടെയും കടന്നു പോകുന്ന മഹാവൃത്തത്തിനാണ് ധ്രുവരേഖ (Meridian)എന്ന്‌ പറയുന്നത്.

The position of a point along the meridian is given by that longitude and its latitude, measured in angular degrees north or south of the Equator. On a Mercator projection or on a Gall-Peters projection, each meridian is perpendicular to all circles of latitude. A meridian is half of a great circle on Earth's surface. The length of a meridian on a modern ellipsoid model of Earth has been estimated as 20,003.93 km (12,429.87 mi).
