Vertebrates are deuterostomal animals with bony or cartilaginous axial endoskeleton — known as the vertebral column, spine or backbone — around and along the spinal cord, including all fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The vertebrates consist of all the taxa within the subphylum Vertebrata and represent the overwhelming majority of the phylum Chordata, with currently about 69,963 species described.

ಕಶೇರುಕ ಕಾರ್ಡೇಟ ವಿಭಾಗದ ಒಂದು ಉಪವಿಭಾಗ (ವರ್ಟಿಬ್ರೇಟ್). ಬೆನ್ನೆಲುಬಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಶೇರುಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆದಿಕಾರ್ಡೇಟುಗಳ ಗುಣಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಗುಣಗಳೂ ಸೇರಿವೆ. ಕಾರ್ಡೇಟುಗಳ ಮೂರು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಗುಣಗಳು ಹೀಗಿವೆ_ನೋಟೊಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಅಥವಾ ಮೂಲ ಕಶೇರುಸ್ತಂಭ, ಗಂಟಲು ಕುಹರದಿಂದಾದ ಜೋಡಿ ಕಿವಿರು ರಂಧ್ರಗಳು, ಬೆನ್ನಿನಕಡೆ ನಳಿಕೆಯಂತಿರುವ ನರಹುರಿ. ಕಶೇರುಕ ಉಪವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ನಾನಾ ಜಾತಿಯ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಆಂತರಿಕವಾಗಿಯೂ ಬಾಹ್ಯವಾಗಿಯೂ ಭಿನ್ನ ರಚನಾ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದರೂ. ಅವೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳಿಗೂ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾದ ಕೆಲವು ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳು ಇವೆ. ಈ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಶೇರುಕಗಳನ್ನು ವರ್ಗೀಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
