Mesopotamia is a historical region of West Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. Today, Mesopotamia is known as present-day Iraq and north-eastern Syria. In the broader sense, the historical region of Mesopotamia also includes parts of present-day Iran, Turkey, and Kuwait.

मेसोपोटामिया का यूनानी अर्थ है "दो नदियों के बीच"। यह इलाका दजला (टिगरिस) और फ़ुरात (इयुफ़्रेटीस) नदियों के बीच के क्षेत्र में पड़ता है। इसमें आधुनिक इराक़ बाबिल ज़िला, उत्तरपूर्वी सीरिया, दक्षिणपूर्वी तुर्की तथा ईरान का क़ुज़ेस्तान प्रांत के क्षेत्र शामिल हैं। यह कांस्ययुगीन सभ्यता का उद्गम स्थल माना जाता है। यहाँ सुमेर, अक्कदी सभ्यता, बेबीलोन तथा असीरिया के साम्राज्य अलग-अलग समय में स्थापित हुए थे। हड़प्पा सभ्यता को मेसोपोटामिया में 'मेलुहा' कहा गया है।
