A governor is an administrative leader and head of a polity or political region, ranking under the head of state and in some cases, such as governors-general, as the head of a state's official representative. Depending on the type of political region or polity, a governor may be either appointed or elected, and the governor's powers can vary significantly, depending on the public laws in place locally. The adjective pertaining to a governor is gubernatorial, from the Latin root gubernare.

राज्यपाल या गवर्नर शासन करने वाले ऐसे व्यक्ति को कहते हैं जो किसी देश के शासक के अधीन हो और उस देश के किसी भाग पर शासन कर रहा हो। संघीय देशों में संघ के राज्यों पर शासन करने वाले व्यक्तियों को अक्सर राज्यपाल का ख़िताब दिया जाता है। कुछ संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका जैसे गणतंत्रों में राज्यपाल सीधे उस राज्य की जनता द्वारा चुने जाते हैं और वह उस राज्य के सर्वोच्च प्रशासनिक अध्यक्ष होते हैं, जबकि भारत जैसे संसदीय गणतंत्रों में अक्सर राज्यपाल केन्द्रीय सर कार या शासक नियुक्त करती है और वह नाम मात्र का अध्यक्ष होता है ।
