Ascites is the abnormal build-up of fluid in the abdomen. Technically, it is more than 25 ml of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, although volumes greater than one liter may occur. Symptoms may include increased abdominal size, increased weight, abdominal discomfort, and shortness of breath. Complications can include spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.

उदरगुहा में द्रव संचय होकर उदर (पेट) का बड़ा दिखना जलोदर (Ascites) कहलाता है। यह अशोथयुक्त (Noninflammatory) होता है। यह रोग नहीं बल्कि हृदय, वृक्क, यकृत इत्यादि में उत्पन्न हुए विकारों का प्रधान लक्षण है। यकृत के प्रतिहारिणी (portal) रक्तसंचरण की बाधा हमेशा तथा विशेष रूप से दिखाई देनेवाले जलोदर का सर्वसाधारण कारण है। यह बाधा कर्कट (Cancer) और सूत्रणरोग (Cirrhosis) जैसे यकृत के अन्दर कुछ विकारों में तथा आमाशय, ग्रहणी, अग्न्याशय इत्यादि एवं विदर (Fissure) में बढ़ी हुई लसीका ग्रंथियों जैसे यकृत के बाहर के कुछ विकारों में प्रतिहारिणी शिराओं पर दबाव पड़ने से उत्पन्न होती है।
