Altitude is a distance measurement, usually in the vertical or "up" direction, between a reference datum and a point or object. The exact definition and reference datum varies according to the context. Although the term altitude is commonly used to mean the height above sea level of a location, in geography the term elevation is often preferred for this usage.

কোনও নির্ধারিত প্রসঙ্গবিন্দু বা প্রসঙ্গতলের সাপেক্ষে কোনও বস্তু বা বিন্দুর উচ্চতা বলতে ঐ প্রসঙ্গবিন্দু বা প্রসঙ্গতল থেকে উপরের দিকে যেকোনও বস্তু বা বিন্দুর উল্লম্ব দূরত্বকে বোঝায়। একে ইংরেজি পরিভাষায় "অ্যালটিচিউড" (Altitude) বা কদাচিৎ "হাইট" (Height) বলে। বিমানচালনা, জ্যামিতি, ভৌগোলিক জরিপ, ক্রীড়া, বায়ুমণ্ডলীয় চাপ, ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে উল্লম্ব প্রসঙ্গতলের পছন্দ ও উচ্চতার সংজ্ঞা ভিন্ন ভিন্ন হতে পারে। তবে সাধারণত কোনও বস্তু বা বিন্দুর উচ্চতা বলতে সমুদ্রপৃষ্ঠ তথা সমুদ্র সমতল থেকে উচ্চতাকে কিংবা ভূপৃষ্ঠকে প্রসঙ্গতল হিসেবে গণ্য করে সেখান থেকে পরিমাপকৃত উচ্চতাকে বোঝায়।
