इन स्टेशनों में यात्रियों की इतनी बड़ी संख्या/भीड़ को संभालने की मूलभूत सुविधाएं नहीं थी। पंजाब, हिमाचल प्रदेश, उत्तर प्रदेश और जम्मू व कश्मीर जैसे उत्तरी राज्यों के लिए दिल्ली एक संपर्क/जोड़ने वाला स्टेशन है। मौजूदा स्टेशनों में यात्रियों के बढ़ते दबाव/बढ़ती संख्या को ध्यान में रखते हुए उत्तर रेलवे ने अतिरिक्त प्रमुख यात्री टर्मिनलों की आवश्यकता की पहचान की है।
