ModeratorThanks Sakshi and CG.
In the following line (from a Tenali Raman story) I could not get the meaning of தும்துவர் in spite of looking in dictionaries.
Can you help filling in the blank and checking the rest of my translation?
அரண்மனையில் வெளிநாடுகளிலிருந்து வந்த தும்துவர்களுக்கு விருந்து ஏகதடபுடலாக நடந்தது.
A grand feast was held for the தும்துவர் (guests/nobles/dignitaries?) who had come from other kingdoms.

Edited to add:
I am not sure the word is actually தும்துவர்
I have copied and pasted it exactly as it appeared in the original passage.
It is possible that there is a spelling mistake in the original and that is why I could not find the word even in the dictionary.
"Sakshi"
ModeratorThoothuvar
Ambassador.
Not
Thumthuvar.
and the rest is okay.

ModeratorThanks Sakshi and CG
So my guess was right.
There was a printing mistake in the original and due to my ignorance I could not guess the correct word which is indeed தூதுவர் (thoothuvar) and not தும்துவர் (thumthuvar)
I could now find the word in the dictionary and it lists ‘messenger’, ‘envoy’ as the meanings.
That makes sense in this context.
Thanks once again and I hope you will continue to help me in my quest to learn this language.

MemberThe correct word should be “Thoothar” (தூதர்).
In modern day context, they are ambassadors who represent their respective countries and are stationed in their respective embassies.
In olden days, they were also known as messengers.

MemberDear all,
Tamilcube.com is an awesome resource. Please visit it when you have the time.

ModeratorI already discovered it.
I agree. It is an awesome resource.
I have already read all the jokes.
I am reading the short stories these days to improve my reading speed and for noting down words that are new to me.
I keep Translate.google.com minimised and open it to quickly translate short sentences and phrases when I have difficulty in understanding them.
Admittedly the translation done by Google is crude but I interpret it intelligently from the context and welcome the fact that it saves me the trouble of opening the dictionary for every single word in a difficult phrase or sentence.
I now use Shabdkosh.com and Tamildict.com as my dictionaries when Google fails.
I will be frequenting this site (Tamilcube) regularly in future.
Please keep us informed about any other sites like this that you come across that may assist beginners and intermediate learners.
