New Memberदक्षिणी वियतनाम में एक गाँव था जहाँ के लोगों को वियतकांग समर्थक मान अमेरिकी सेना ने पूरे गाँव को घेर कर पुरूषों को मार डाला,औरतों-बच्चियों को बंधक बनाकर कई दिनों तक सामूहिक बलात्कार किया,फिर उन्हें भी मार कर पूरे गाँव में आग लगा दिया। लाशों के बीच दबा एक बूढा जिंदा बच गया था जिसने इस घटना को उजागर किया। इस घटना के द्वारा अमेरिकी सेना ने बर्बरता एवं पाशविकता की सीमा को भी लांघ दिया था।अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर अमेरिकी सेना की जबर्दस्त आलोचना हुई और उसके साख को भी गहरा आघात पहुँचा।

Suspecting the population of the village to be Viet Cong supporters, the American army surrounded the village, killed all the men and made captives of the women and children and for sevaral days indulged in gang rapes and then after killing them, they burnt the entire village. Amongst the corpses, an old man had survived and he brought to light this event. In this incident the American army had crossed all limits of barbarity and brutality. There was strong criticism of the American Army at the international level and it suffered a serious setback in its credibility/reputation.
