ਪਾਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਜਲ ਇੱਕ ਆਮ ਰਾਸਾਇਣਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ ਹਾਈਡ੍ਰੋਜਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਕਸੀਜਨ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ। ਆਮ ਤੌਰ ’ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਤਰਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਹ ਠੋਸ (ਬਰਫ਼) ਅਤੇ ਗੈਸ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਤਕਰੀਬਨ 71 % ਹਿੱਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਢਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ (96.5%)ਮਹਾਸਾਗਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ 1.7% ਪਾਣੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨਦੋਜ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ 0.001% ਜਲ-ਵਾਸ਼ਪ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਦਲ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।. ਹਿਮਨਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਧਰੁਵੀ ਬਰਫ਼-ਚੋਟੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ 1.7% ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ, ਝੀਲਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਤਾਲਾਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 0.6 % ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਛੋਟੀ ਮਾਤਰਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਟੈਂਕੀਆਂ, ਜੈਵਿਕ ਨਿਕਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਧ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹਿਤ ਹੈ। ਬਰਫ਼ੀਲੀਆਂ ਚੋਟੀਆਂ, ਹਿਮਨਦੀਆਂ, ਏਕੁਆਵੀਫ਼ਰ ਜਾਂ ਝੀਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਾਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਮੁਹੱਈਆ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
