- कुत्ते या गीदड़ की जाति का एक जंतु जो ऊँचाई में कुत्ते से छोटा होता है, पर विस्तार में लंबा । विशेष—भारतवर्ष की लोमड़ी का रंग गीदड़ सा होता है; पर यह उससे बहुत छोटी होता है । इसकी नाक नुकीली, पूँछ झवरी और आँखएं बहुत तेज होती हैं और यह बहुत तेज भागनेवाली होती है । अच्छे अच्छे कुत्ते इसका पीछा नहीं कर सकते । चालाकी के लिये यह बहुत प्रसिद्ध है । ऋतु के अनुसार इसका रोवाँ झड़ता और रंग बदलता है । यह कीड़े मकोड़ों और छोटे छोटे पक्षियों को पकड़कर खाती है । अन्य देशों में इसकी अनेक जातियाँ मिलती है । अमेरिका में लाल रंग की लोमड़ी होती है, जिसके रोएँ जाड़े में सफेद रंग के हो जाते हैं । कहीं कहीं बिल्कुल काली लोमड़ी भी होती है । उन सबके बाल या रोएँ बहुत कोमल होते हैं, और उनका शिकार उनकी खाल के लिये किया जाता है, दजिसे ससूर या पोस्तीन कहते है । शीपतकटिबंध प्रदेश की लोमड़िया बिल बनाकर झुंड में रहती है । युरोप की लोमड़ियाँ बड़ी भयानक होती हैं । वे गाँवों में घुसकर अंगुर आदि फुलों का और पालतु पक्षियों का नाश कर देती हैं । बारत की लोमड़ी चैत बैसाख में बच्चे देती है । बच्चों की संख्या पाँच छह होती है; और वे डेढ़ वर्ष में पूरी बाढ़ को पहुँचते हैं । इनकी आयु तेरह चौदह वर्ष की कही गई है ।
