भालू NOUN
- एक प्रसिद्ध स्तनपायी भीषण चौपाया जो प्रायः सारे संसार के बड़े बड़े जंगलों और पहाड़ों में पाया जाता है । रीछ । विशेष— आकार और रंग आदि के विचार से यह कई प्रकार का होता है । यह प्रायः ४ फुट से ७ फुट तक लंबा और २ १/२ फुट से ४ फुट तक ऊँचा होता है । साधारणतः यह काले या भूरे रंग का होता है और इसके शरीर पर बुहत बड़े बड़े बाल होते हैं । उत्तरी ध्रुव के भालू का रंग प्रायः सफेद होता है । यह मांस भी खाता है और फल, मूल आदि भी । यह प्रायः दिन भर माँद में सोया रहता है और रात के समय शिकार की तलाश में बाहर निकलता है । भारत में प्रायः मदारी इसे पकड़कर नाचना और तरह तरह के खेल करना सिखलाते हैं । इसकी मादा प्रायः जाड़े के दिनों में एक साथ दो बच्चे देती है । बहुत ठंढे देशों में यह जाड़े के दिनों में प्रायः भूखा प्यासा और मुरदा सा होकर अपनी माँद में पड़ा रहता है । और वसंत ऋतु आने पर शिकार ढूँढ़ने निकलता है । उस समय यह और भी भीषण हो जाता है । यह शिकार के पीछे अथवा फल आदि खाने के लिये पेड़ों पर भी चढ़ जाता है । जंगल में यह अकेले दुकेले मनुष्यों पर भी आक्रमण करने से नहीं चूकता ।

भालू या रीछ (Bear), जिसका वैज्ञानिक नाम अरसिडाए (Ursidae) है, स्तनधारी प्राणियों के मांसाहारी गण का एक जीववैज्ञानिक कुल है। हालाँकि इसकी सिर्फ आठ ज्ञात जातियाँ हैं, इसका निवास पूरी दुनिया में बहुत ही विस्तृत है। यह एशिया, यूरोप, उत्तर अमेरिका और दक्षिण अमेरिका के महाद्वीपों में पाया जाता है। देखने में, सभी भालुओं के आम लक्षणों में बड़ा शरीर, मोटी टाँगे व बाज़ू, लम्बा बुक्क (नाक), पूरे बदन पर घने बाल और पाँव में सख़्त नाख़ून शामिल हैं। ध्रुवीय भालू अधिकतर मांस-मछली ही खाता है और बड़ा पांडा सिर्फ़ बांस के पत्ते-टहनियाँ खाता है, लेकिन भालुओं की अन्य छह जातियाँ सर्वाहारी होती हैं और मांस और वनस्पति दोनों खाती हैं।

Common characteristics of modern bears include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and short tails.
