- पृथ्वी का वह विभाग जिसका कोई अलग नाम हो, जिसके अंतर्गत कई प्रांत, नगर, ग्राम आदि हों तथा जिसमें अधिकांश एक जाति के और एक भाषा बोलनेवाले लोग रहते हैं । जनपद । विशेष—देश तीन प्रकार के होते हैं—जांगल्य, अनूप और साधारण । तीन प्रकार के और देश माने गए हैं—देवमातृक (जिसमें वर्षा ही के जल से खेती आदि के सारे कार्य हों), नदीमातृक और उभयमातृक ।
- वह भूभाग जो एक ही राजा या शासक के अधीन अथवा एक शासनपद्धति के अंतर्गत हो । राष्ट्र ।
- स्थान । जगह ।
- शरीर का कोई भाग । अंग । जैसे, स्कंध देश, कटि देश ।
- एक राग जो किसी के मत से संपुर्ण जाति का और किसी के मत से षाड़व (ऋवर्जित) हैं ।
- जैनशास्त्रानुसार चौथा पंचक जिसक द्वारा अर्थानुसंधानपूर्वक तपस्या अर्थात् गुरु०, जन, गुहा, स्मशान और रुद्र की वृद्धि होती है ।

एक देश किसी भी जगह या स्थान है जिधर लोग साथ-साथ रहते है, और जहाँ सरकार होती है। संप्रभु राज्य एक प्रकार का देश है। संयुक्त राष्ट्र १९३ देशों को मानती है।
