कोयला NOUN

1. एक प्रकार का बहुत बड़ा पेड़ जो आसाम में होता है । इसकी लकड़ी चिकनी, कड़ी और बहुत मजबूत होती है और इमारत के काम में आती है । इसकी पत्तियाँ रेशम के कीड़ों को खिलाई जाती हैं । इसे सोम भी कहते हैं ।
2. वह जला हुआ अंश या पदार्थ जो जली हुई लकड़ी के अगारों को बुझाने से बच रहता है ।
3. एक प्रकार का खनिज पदार्थ जो कोयले के रूप का होता हैं और जलाने के काम में आता है । विशेष—यह कई रंग और प्रकार का होता है । जहाजों और रेलों के इंजिनों तथा भट्ठों आदि में यही तक ठहरती है । इसकी आंच बहुत तेज होती है और बहुत देर तक ठहरती है । इसकी खाने संसार के प्रायः सभी भागों में पाई जाती है । बनस्पति और वृक्ष आदि के मिट्टी के नीचे दब जाने और बहुत दिनों तक उसी दशा मे पड़े रहने का कारण उनकी सड़ी लकड़ियाँ आदि जमकर पत्थर या चटटान का रूप धारण कर लेती है और अंदर की गरमी से जलकर उसे वह रूप प्राप्त होता है जिसमें वह खानों से निकलता है । इसलिए इसे पत्थर का कोयला भी कहते हैं । इसमें मिट्टी का भी कुछ अंश मिला रहता है जो इसके जल चुकने पर राख के साथ बाकी रह जाता है ।

कोयला एक ठोस कार्बनिक पदार्थ है जिसको ईंधन के रूप में प्रयोग में लाया जाता है। ऊर्जा के प्रमुख स्रोत के रूप में कोयला अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण हैं। कुल प्रयुक्त ऊर्जा का 35% से 40% भाग कोयलें से प्राप्त होता हैं। कोयले से अन्य दहनशील तथा उपयोगी पदार्थ भी प्राप्त किए जाते हैं। ऊर्जा के अन्य स्रोतों में पेट्रोलियम तथा उसके उत्पाद का नाम सर्वोपरि है। विभिन्न प्रकार के कोयले में कार्बन की मात्रा अलग-अलग होती है।
