The Quaternary is the current and most recent of the three periods of the Cenozoic Era in the geologic time scale of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS). It follows the Neogene Period and spans from 2.58 million years ago to the present. As of 2023, the Quaternary Period is divided into two epochs: the Pleistocene and the Holocene ; a third epoch, the Anthropocene, has recently been proposed, but it is not officially recognised by the ICS.

तृतीय कल्प के अंतिम चरण में पृथ्वी पर अनेक भौगोलिक एवं भौमिकीय परिवर्तन मिलते हैं, जिनसे एक नए युग का प्रादुर्भाव होना निश्चित हो जाता है। इन्हीं परिवर्तनों के आधार पर डेसनोआर ने 1829 ई. में चतुर्थ कल्प की कल्पना की। यद्यपि अब भूशास्त्रवेत्ताओं का मत है कि इस नवीन कल्प को तृतीय कल्प से पृथक्‌ नहीं किया जा सकता है, फिर भी दो मुख्य कारणों से इस काल को अलग रखना उचित नहीं होगा। इनमें से एक है इस समय में हुआ मानव जाति का विकास और दूसरा इस काल की विचित्र जलवायु।
