A metaphor is a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas. Metaphors are usually meant to create a likeness or an analogy.

रूपक साहित्य में एक प्रकार का अर्थालंकार है जिसमें बहुत अधिक साम्य के आधार पर प्रस्तुत में अप्रस्तुत का आरोप करके अर्थात् उपमेय या उपमान के साधर्म्य का आरोप करके और दोंनों भेदों का अभाव दिखाते हुए उपमेय या उपमान के रूप में ही वर्णन किया जाता है। इसके सांग रूपक, अभेद रुपक, तद्रूप रूपक, न्यून रूपक, परम्परित रूपक आदि अनेक भेद हैं। उदाहरण-1- चरन कमल बन्दउँ हरिराई
