Further questions: Is the word emotionally neutral? I mean is it a non-derogatory word?
Secondly is it a new word that has been developed to discuss modern social issues?
I’d be interested if you, or someone else, could comment on that.

Frankly, I have never heard this word.
But it can be found in the dictionary. Shabdkosh.com, at this very site lists it.
The word is not common. वेश्या, रंडी, पतीता and the Urdu word तवायफ are more the more commonly used words for prostitute.
Possibly, just as ##### worker is a more dignified term for prostitute, मंगलामुखी is similarly a less contemptuous term.
I will check back later for any answer from the more knowledgeable readers.

Thanks for your response. I looked up the word on Shabdkosh and didn’t find it. It might be a recent inclusion. I came across the word in an article in Dainik Jagran on the recognition of transgender people in India. http://www.jagran.com/news/national-sc-directs-centre-and-state-govts-to-treat-transgenders-as-third-#####-category-11235891.html?src=p1 (Sorry I can’t create a hyperlink here). As it was in a paper in an article that was generally approving of the change I got the impression it was a more respectful word and possibly a newly created one.
