संहार का शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है दुष्टों का वध करना और पृथ्वी पर सज्जनों की रक्षा करना । शास्त्रों के अनुसार भगवान शिव मूलतः संहार के देवता और जगतपिता हैं, भगवान विष्णु पालनहार हैं और ब्रह्मदेव रचियेता हैं । इस संसार को मूलतः भगवान विष्णु की संतान माना जाता है क्योंकि भगवान विष्णु के नाभिकमल से ब्रह्मदेव की उत्पत्ति हुई और भगवान विष्णु के तेज से भगवान शिव की उत्पत्ति हुई। इसलिए इन्हें त्रिदेव कहतें हैं और शास्त्रों के अनुसार भगवान शिव और भगवान विष्णु एक हैं उनके इस रूप को हरिहर कहतें हैं । महर्षि दत्तात्रेय जिन्हें त्रिदेवों का अंश कहतें हैं परंतु वे मूलत: भगवान विष्णु के अवतार हैंं । इनके दो ज्येष्ठ भ्राता चंद्रमा जिन्हें ब्रह्मदेव का अंशावतार कहतें हैं और दुर्वासा जिन्हें शिवजी का अंशावतार कहतें हैं ।
