1. दृष्टांत । मिसाल । न्याय में वाक्य के पाँच अवयवों में से तीसरा जिसक साथ साध्य का साधर्म्य या वैधर्म्य होता है । विशेष—उदाहरण दो प्रकार का होता है, एक 'अन्वयी' और दूसरा 'व्यतिरेकी' । जिससे साध्य के साथ साधर्म्य होता है वह अन्वयी है; जैसे—शब्द अनित्य है, उत्पत्ति धर्मवाला होने से घट की तरह । यहाँ घट अन्वयी उदाहरण है । व्यतिरेकी वह है जिसका साध्य के साथ वैधर्म्य हो; जैसे—शब्द अनित्य है उत्पत्ति धर्मवाला होने से । जो उत्पत्ति धर्मवाला नहीं होता, वह नित्य होता है, जैसे, आकाश, आत्मा आदि ।

3. एक प्रकार का अर्थालंकार जिसमें प्रस्तुतार्थ के समर्थन के लिये उसी की समता के अप्रस्तुत को उदाहरणस्वरूप उपस्थित कर देते हैं ।
