- उपनयन के समय गायत्री मंत्र का उपदेश करनेवाला । गुरु । विशेष—पाणिनि ने चार प्रकार के शिक्षकों का उल्लेख किया है । आचार्य, प्रवक्ता, श्रोत्रिय, अध्यापक । इनमें आचार्य का स्थान सर्वोच्च था । शिष्य का उपनयन कराने का अधिकार तो आचार्य को ही था । स्वयं आचार्य का काम करनेवाली स्त्री आचार्या कहलाती है । आचार्य की पत्नी को आचार्यानी कहते हैं ।

Description
In Indian religions and society, an acharya is a preceptor and expert instructor in matters such as religion, or any other subject. An acharya is a highly learned person with a title affixed to the names of learned subject. The designation has different meanings in Hinduism, Buddhism and secular contexts.
