परमात्मा शब्द दो शब्दों ‘परम’ तथा `आत्मा’ की सन्धि से बना है। परम का अर्थ सर्वोच्च एवं आत्मा से अभिप्राय है चेतना, जिसे प्राण शक्ति भी कहा जाता है। आधुनिक हिन्दी में ये शब्द भगवान का ही मतलब रखता है। परमात्मा का अर्थ परम आत्मा से हैं परम का अर्थ होता है सबसे श्रेष्ठ यानी सबसे श्रेष्ठ आत्मा आत्मा का अर्थ होता है हर प्राणी के अंदर विराजमान चेतना के रूप में एक चेतन स्वरूप तो इसका अभिप्राय हुआ कि परमात्मा एक आत्मा है और वह आत्मा सबसे बड़ी है और सबसे शुद्ध और पवित्र है।

Paramatman or Paramātmā is the Absolute Atman, or supreme Self, in various philosophies such as the Vedanta and Yoga schools in Hindu theology, as well as other Indian religions like Sikhism. Paramatman is the "Primordial Self" or the "Self Beyond" who is spiritually identical with the absolute and ultimate reality. Selflessness is the attribute of Paramatman, where all personality/individuality vanishes.
