- एक प्रकार का बड़ा मांसाहारी पक्षी । विशेष—इसकी छोटी बड़ी कई जातियाँ होती है । सबसे बड़ा गिद्ध प्राय । तीन फुट लंबा होता और प्रायः बकरियों, मुर्गियों तथा दूसरी पालतू चिड़ियों को उठा ले जाता है । यह पक्षी प्रायः मरे हुए जीवों का मांस खाता है; इसो से कवियों ने रणस्थल में गिद्धों का दृश्य प्रायः दिखालाया है । इसकी आँखें बहुत तेज होती हैं और यह आकाश में बहुत उँचा उड़ सकता है । इसके शरीर का रंग मटमैला होता है और पैरों में उँगलियों तक पर होते हैं । इसका किसी मनुष्य के शरीर पर मँड़राना या मकान पर बैठना अशुभ माना जाता है ।

गिद्ध शिकारी पक्षियों के अंतर्गत आनेवाले मुर्दाखोर पक्षी हैं, जिन्हें गृद्ध कुल में एकत्र किया गया है। ये सब पक्षी दो भागों में बाँटे जा सकते हैं। पहले भाग में अमरीका के कॉण्डर (Condor), किंग वल्चर, कैलिफोर्नियन वल्चर, टर्की बज़र्ड और अमरीकी ब्लैक वल्चर होते हैं और दूसरे भाग में अफ्रीका और एशिया के राजगृद्ध, काला गिद्ध, चमर गिद्ध, बड़ा गिद्ध और गोबर गिद्ध मुख्य हैं।
A vulture is a bird of prey that scavenges on carrion. There are 23 extant species of vulture. Old World vultures include 16 living species native to Europe, Africa, and Asia; New World vultures are restricted to North and South America and consist of seven identified species, all belonging to the Cathartidae family. A particular characteristic of many vultures is a bald, unfeathered head. This bare skin is thought to keep the head clean when feeding, and also plays an important role in thermoregulation.
