Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.

భగవంతుడు ఉన్నాడనే వాదాన్ని ప్రశ్నించేవాళ్లను లేదా ఖండించేవాళ్లను నాస్తికులు అని పిలుస్తారు. చాలా మంది నాస్తికత్వాన్ని, ఏ మతాన్నీ ఆచరించకుండా ఉండడంతో సమానంగా చూస్తారు, అయితే కొన్ని సార్లు నాస్తికత్వాన్ని ఆస్తికత్వాన్ని పాటించని వాళ్లుగా చూడొచ్చు. ఉదాహరణకు బౌద్ధమతంలో దేవుడున్నాడనే భావనకు విలువలేదు, కాబట్టి ఆ మతాన్ని ఆచరించే వారందరినీ నాస్తికులుగానే చూడొచ్చు. కమ్యూనిస్టులు ప్రాథమికంగా నాస్తికులై ఉండాలి. ఆస్తికవాదం ఎంత ప్రాచీనమో నాస్తిక వాదం కూడా అంతే ప్రాచీనం. ఈశ్వరవాదం, నిరీశ్వరవాదం, నాస్తికత్వం... ఇలా అనేక అంశాలమీద శతాబ్దాలుగా చర్చ, వాదోపవాదాలు నడుస్తూనే ఉన్నాయి.
