In religion, a prophet or prophetess is an individual who is regarded as being in contact with a divine being and is said to speak on behalf of that being, serving as an intermediary with humanity by delivering messages or teachings from the supernatural source to other people. The message that the prophet conveys is called a prophecy.

ਨਬੀ ਜਾਂ ਪੈਗ਼ੰਬਰ (prophet) ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਗੁਣਗਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਦਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਕਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਬਾਈਬਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਯਹੂਦੀ ਧਰਮ, ਈਸਾਈ ਧਰਮ, ਇਸਲਾਮ, ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਯੂਨਾਨ, ਪਾਰਸੀ ਆਦਿ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਨਬੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਦਾਵੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਅਜਿਹੀ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਵਾਹਕ ਬਣਾਇਆ।
