चौपाई NOUN
- एक प्रकार का छंद जिसके प्रत्येक चरण में १६ मात्राएँ होती है । इसके बनाने में केवल द्विकल और त्रिकल का ही प्रयोग होता है । इसमें किसी त्रिकल के बाद दो गुरु और सबसे अंत में जगण या तगण न पड़ना चाहिए । इसे रूप चौपाई या पादाकुलक भी कहते हैं । विशेष—वास्तव में चौपाई (चतुष्पदी) वही है जिसमें चार चरण हों और चारों चरणों का अनुप्रास मिला हो । जैसे,— छूअत सिला भइ नारि सुहाई । पाहन तें न काठ कठिनाई । तरनिउ मुनिधरनी होइ जाई । बाट परइ मोरि नावउडा़ई । पर साधारणतः लोग दो चरणों को ही (जिन्हें वास्तव में अर्धाली कहते हैं) चौपाई कहते और मानते हैं । मात्रिक के अतिरिक्त कुछ चौपाइयाँ ऐसी भी होती हैं जो वर्णवृत्त के अंतर्गत आती हैं और जिनके अनेक भेद और भिन्न भिन्न नाम हैं । उनका वर्णन अलग अलग दिया गया है ।

Description
चौपाई मात्रिक सम छन्द का एक भेद है। प्राकृत तथा अपभ्रंश के 16 मात्रा के वर्णनात्मक छन्दों के आधार पर विकसित हिन्दी का सर्वप्रिय और अपना छन्द है। गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने रामचरित मानस में चौपाइ छन्द का बहुत अच्छा निर्वाह किया है। चौपाई में चार चरण होते हैं, प्रत्येक चरण में 16-16 मात्राएँ होती हैं तथा अन्त में गुरु होता है।
