कारण NOUN
- हेतु । वजह । सबब । जैसे, तुम किस कारण वहाँ गए थे । विशेष—इस शब्द के साथ विभक्ति 'से' प्रायः नहिं लगाई जाती ।
- वह जिसके बीना कार्य न हों । वह जिसका किसी वस्तु या क्रिया के पुर्व संबद्ध रूप होना अवश्यक हो । वह जिससे दूसरे पदार्थ की संप्राप्ति हो । हेतु । निमित । प्रत्यय । विशेष— न्यान के मत से कारण तीन प्रकार के होते है— समवायि (जैसे तेतु वस्त्र का), असमवाय (तंतुओं का संयोग वस्त्र का ) । और निमित्त ( जैसे जुलाहा, ढरकी आदि वस्त्र के । योगदर्शनमेंकारण नौ प्रकार के हैं—उत्पति, स्थिति, अभिव्यक्ति, विकार, ज्ञान, द्राप्ति, विच्छेद, अन्यत्व और धृति । यह विभिन्नता केवल कार्यभेद से जान पड़ती है । उत्पति ज्ञान का कारण मन, शरीरस्थिति का कारण आहार, रूप की अभिव्यक्ति का कारण प्रकाश पचनीय वस्तुओं के विचार का कारण अग्नि अग्नि के कारणत्व का धूमज्ञान, विवेकप्राप्ति और अशुद्धिविच्छेद का कारण योगांगों का अनुष्ठान, स्वर्णकार कुंडल सें सोने के रूपान्यत्व का कारण, इस जगत् और इद्रियों का अधिष्ठान ईश्वर वेदांत उपादान कारण मानता है । कोई कोई कारण तीन प्रकार का मानते हैं, उपादान (समवायि), निमित्त और साधारण । चार्वाक कारण को कोई पदार्थनहिं मानता । सांख्य त्रयोगुणात्मिका प्रकृति को मूल कारण कहता है । वेदांत का कहना है कि अचेतन प्रकृति से कार्य को उत्पत्ति नहीं हो सकती । कणाद ने परमाणु को सावयव जगत् का उपादान कारण माना है । ३, आदि । मूल ।

जब कोई प्रक्रिया या प्रावस्था किसी दूसरी प्रक्रिया या प्रावस्था को उत्पन्न करती है तो इसे कारणता कहते हैं। जो प्रक्रिया/प्रावस्था उत्पन्न होती है उसे 'प्रभाव' कहते हैं तथा प्रभाव को उत्पन्न करने वाली प्रक्रिया/प्रावस्था को 'कारण' कहा जाता है। कारणता को 'कार्यकारण' भी कहते हैं। ध्यातव्य ह कि कारण, प्रभाव को उत्पन्न करने के लिए आंशिक रूप से जिम्मेदार है तथा प्रभाव, आंशिक रूप से कारण पर निर्भर होता है।
