A thesaurus, sometimes called a synonym dictionary or dictionary of synonyms, is a reference work which arranges words by their meanings, sometimes as a hierarchy of broader and narrower terms, sometimes simply as lists of synonyms and antonyms. They are often used by writers to help find the best word to express an idea:

...to find the word, or words, by which [an] idea may be most fitly and aptly expressed

समान्तर कोश शब्दकोश के ही समान सन्दर्भ पुस्तक को कहा जाता है जिसमें शब्दों के अर्थ व उच्चारण की बजाय उसके समानार्थक तथा विलोम शब्दों व उनके प्रयोग पर जोर दिया जाता है। शब्दकोश की भाँति समान्तर कोश में शब्दों को पारिभाषित नहीं किया जाता वरन् समान शब्दों में भेद स्पष्ट कर सटीक शब्द के चुनाव को आसान बनाया जाना इसका ध्येय होता है। अतः समान्तर कोश को शब्दसूची नहीं समझा जाना चाहिये।
