Description
A pigment is a colored substance that is completely or nearly insoluble in water. In contrast, dyes are typically soluble, at least at some stage in their use. Generally dyes are often organic compounds whereas pigments are often inorganic compounds. Pigments of prehistoric and historic value include ochre, charcoal, and lapis lazuli.
वर्णक या रंगद्रव्य या रंजक या पिगमेन्ट (pigment) ऐसे पदार्थ को कहते हैं जो अपने ऊपर गिरने वाले प्रकाश को किसी अन्य रंग में बदलकर प्रतिबिम्बित करे। ऐसे पदार्थ अपने ऊपर गिरने वाले प्रकाश की किरणों में से कुछ तरंगदैर्घ्य (वेवलेन्थ) वाली किरणें सोख लेते हैं और बाकी को प्रतिबिम्बित कर देते हैं। जो किरणें प्रतिबिम्बित होती हैं पदार्थ का रंग वही दिखता है। उदाहरण के लिए सिन्दूर हीमोग्लोबिन नीले व हरे रंग वाली किरणें सोख लेता है और लाल व नारंगी किरणें प्रतिबिम्बित करता है। प्रयोग-योग्य रंगद्रव्य ऐसे पदार्थ और द्रव होते हैं जिन्हें अन्य वस्तुओं पर लेपा जा सके जिससे उन वस्तुओं का भी वही रंग हो जाता है।
