महात्मा शब्द दो शब्दों महा और आत्मा के मेल से बना है और इसका अर्थ होता है एक महान व्यक्ति मूलत: यह शब्द संस्कृत का है पर अब यह शब्द हिन्दी सहित बिश्व की सभी प्रमुख भाषाओं मे इसी अर्थ मे प्रयुक्त होता है। ऋग्वेद में सभी मनुष्य जो पृथ्वी पर विचरण करते है, और महान कार्यों को करने के बाद जगत का कल्याण करने की कामना हमेशा अपने मन, कर्म और वाणी के अन्दर रखते है, महात्मा कहलाते हैं। महात्मा शब्द आधुनिक ईसाई धर्म मे प्रयोग होने वाले सेंट (संत) शब्द से बहुत हद तक मेल खाता है।
