Determinism is the philosophical view that all events in the universe, including human decisions and actions, are causally inevitable. Deterministic theories throughout the history of philosophy have developed from diverse and sometimes overlapping motives and considerations. Like eternalism, determinism focuses on particular events rather than the future as a concept. The opposite of determinism is indeterminism, or the view that events are not deterministically caused but rather occur due to chance. Determinism is often contrasted with free will, although some philosophers claim that the two are compatible.

दर्शनशास्त्र में नियतत्ववाद, नियतिवाद या निर्धारणवाद (determinism) वह विचारधारा है जिसके अनुसार सभी होने वाली घटनाएँ पहले से उपस्थित परिस्थितियों द्वारा निर्धारित होती हैं। इसके अनुसार मानवों व अन्य जीवों में मुक्त कर्म की क्षमता नहीं है क्योंकि उनके सारे कर्म उनकी परिस्थितियों के आधार पर होते हैं, अर्थात उनके विचार भी परिस्थितियों के अनुसार उत्पन्न होते हैं। नियतत्ववादी यह दावा करते हैं कि ब्रह्माण्ड में हर क्षण में जो हो रहा है वह पूरी तरह पूर्वनिर्धारित है। इसके विपरीत अनियतत्ववाद की विचारधारा है, जिसके अनुसार हर क्षण में मुक्त कर्म या आकस्मिक घटनाओं के कारण ऐसी चीज़ें होती रहती हैं जिन्हें पहले से निर्घारित नहीं करा जा सकता।
