Description
An academy is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning. The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece.
अकादमी, मूलतः प्राचीन यूनान में एथेंस नगर में स्थित एक स्थानीय वीर 'अकादेमस' के व्यक्तिगत उद्यान का नाम था। कालांतर में यह वहाँ के नागरिकों को जनोद्यान के रूप में भेंट कर दिया गया था और उनेक लिए खेल, व्यायाम, शिक्षा और चिकित्सा का केंद्र बन गया था। प्रसिद्ध दार्शनिक अफलातून (प्लेटो) ने इसी जनोद्यान में एथेंस के प्रथम दर्शन विद्यापीठ की स्थापना की। आगे चलकर इस विद्यापीठ को ही अकादमी कहा जाने लगा। एथेंस की यह एक ही ऐसी संस्था थी जिसमें नगरवासियों के अतिरिक्त बाहर के लोग भी सम्मिलित हो सकते थे।
