A commonwealth is a traditional English term for a political community founded for the common good. The noun "commonwealth", meaning "public welfare, general good or advantage", dates from the 15th century. Originally a phrase, it comes from the old meaning of "wealth", which is "well-being", and is itself a loose translation of the Latin res publica (republic). The term literally meant "common well-being". In the 17th century, the definition of "commonwealth" expanded from its original sense of "public welfare" or "commonweal" to mean "a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people; a republic or democratic state".

कॉमनवेल्थ (Commonwealth) ब्रिटेन के इतिहास में उन राजनैतिक इकाईयों को कहा जाता था जो राजाओं-सम्राटों की बजाय साधारण नागरिकों के सर्वहित के नाम पर स्थापित हुई हो। इसमें अंग्रेज़ी गृहयुद्ध के बाद 1649–53 और 1659–60 काल में ऑलिवर क्रॉमवेल और उसके पुत्र व उत्तराधिकारी के नेतृत्व में स्थापित "इंगलैंड का कॉमनवेल्थ" भी एक उदाहरण था। आधुनिक काल में यह "गणतंत्र" के बराबर माना जाता है। वर्तमान में तीन देशों के औपचारिक नाम में यह शब्द पाया जाता है: ऑस्ट्रेलिया कॉमनवेल्थ, बाहामास कॉमनवेल्थ और दोमिनिका कॉमनवेल्थ। कुछ अंग्रेज़ीभाषी देशों के राज्यों के सरकारी नामों में भी यह शब्द मिलता है, मसलन संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका के पेनसिलवेनिया राज्य का औपचारिक नाम "पेनसिलवेनिया का कॉमनवेल्थ" है।
