I watch Hindi TV soaps and there is a verb that comes up *very* commonly, meaning to insult or humiliate. It sounds like beshna but it could be bheshna, bhejhna, baijna, and other combinations. I’ve looked it up countless times in every dictionary I can lay my hands on including shabdkosh but nothing lists it either as Hindi or as a Hindi translation of insult or humiliate. Can anyone tell me how this word should be spelt? Thank you!

I think you might be looking for besharam - shameless

Technically speaking its Urdu.
Besharam = be (without) + sharam (shame)

Thanks for the reply but I don’t think that’s it. The word I hear is a verb and has the usual verb endings depending on who the subject is - for example voh mujse bezti hai (she insults me)  or ve usse bezte the (they were insulting him/her). It’s a really common word in the soaps on the Star Plus channel but I can’t find it written anywhere.

It could be beizzati (insult/humiliate)

Again Urdu. Beizzati = be (without) + izzat (respect)

Example: Usne meri beizzati ki.
            He insulted me.

Reason you didn’t find it on Shabdkosh might be because it is Urdu. See this in the news section:
“While we adore Urdu as a language, please be aware that this dictionary is an English-Hindi dictionary. So, please only contribute those Urdu words that are regularly used in Hindi speaking areas.”

Does that work for you?

THANK YOU! That’s what I was looking for. I was wrong about it being a verb. Have found it in my dictionary now.
