My answer ( gaya tha is written..bcz gv sir says that gaya tha ( had should be used ) and for gaya ( past simple )

If the sentence is : Main waha kal gaya tha
And your Madam says the translation is : I was gone there yesterday
Then your Madam is wrong in my humble opinion

I had been there yesterday. OR . I had gone there yesterday are both right.

@gv sir

Madam has said ,” past simple is used to indicate an action completed in the past.
If specific time is mentioned then past simple is used

For example
She left school last year
I received his letter a week ago…
The steamer sailed yesterday
Last year , week ago , yesterday all indicate specific time therefore past simple is used.

Main waha kal gaya tha
I was gone there yesterday
It is correct because yesterday indicate a specific time

Sorry !
I don’t agree that “I was gone there yesterday” is the correct translation for “main wahan kal gayaa thaa”
