Moderator“In a vain shadow ” is the title of a novel by James Hadley Chase.
I googled it and got the following information:
The phrase is a quote from a burial service in the Book of Common Prayer: “For man walketh in a vain shadow”.
There is a very similar passage in the King James version of the Bible (Psalms 39:6): “Surely every man walketh in a vain shew”.
Basically, the idea is, I believe, that a man walks through his life as a mere ghost, that his earthly existence is ephemeral.
