प्रकृति द्वारा प्रदान किए गए वे सभी पदार्थ जो मानवीय आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने की क्षमता रखते हैं संसाधन कहलाते हैं।परंतु प्रकृति प्रदत्त पदार्थों का संसाधन के रूप में परिवर्तन कई कारकों से प्रभावित होता है।
कांगो नदी पर बाँध बनाकर उससे जलविद्युत तैयार करने की तकनीक कांगो देश के पास नहीं है जिससे यह नदी जल संसाधन का रूप नहीं ले सकी है। इसी तरह,छोटानागपुर पठार के खनिज भंडारों का युगों तक कोई महत्व नहीं था परंतु जब लोगों ने उसका निष्कासन एवं उपयोग करना आरंभ किया तब वे खनिज संसाधन बन गए।इसी प्रकार, मरूस्थल में पड़ा बालू जब शहर लाया जाता है तब वह संसाधन बन जाता है।औद्योगिक क्रांति के पहले कोयला संसाधन की बजाय काला पत्थर माना जाता था।

All substances found in nature have the capacity of fulfilling mankind needs.But conversion of natural sources into resources depends on lot of factors.

A natural source like Kango river is not converted into resource as Kango nation is not having the technology of making a dam & producing hydroelectric from it. Similarly ,mineral deposits which are found in abundance in Chota Nagpur area were of no value till people started extracting & using it thereby making it resource.Similarly desert sand when brought to city becomes resource.Before industrial revolution coal was considered as black stone instead of resource.

All the materials that Nature has given us, which have the capacity to fulfill human needs, are called Resources. But the conversion of materials given by Nature, into resources is influenced by several factors. Congo does not have the technology to generate hydro electricity by building a dam on the Congo River, due to which this river has been unable to become a resource. Likewise, the mineral deposits in the Chota Nagpur Plateau did not have any importance for ages, but, when their extraction and use commenced, they became mineral resources. In the same way, the sand in the desert becomes a resource when brought to the city. Before the Industrial Revolution, Coal was considered a black stone instead of a resource.
