None of these terms satisfactorily explain the concept of जूठन, which is used commonly by Indians to describe food left over by someone (that is half eaten, or pre-tasted food) and which causes some kind of revulsion in others.
For the benefit of foreigners, we could say that a cup of tea sipped by some one for tasting it, is now जूठन for another. In some societies they may not mind but in India we are particularl about “purity” and perhaps “hygiene”.
But nowadays in cities, the youngsters don’t bother about this. I have seen young couples licking the same ice cream cone. Once I asked a young boy about how he feels about “जूठन”. He told me “Uncle, when we kiss, no one bothers. Why should जूठन be an issue?”
I think he has a point.
